Secret Santa for couples

Enter each couple as a pair and the draw will never match them with each other. If your rules make a draw impossible, you will be told which people are stuck before anything is sent.

How to enter couples and partners

  1. Type every name once. Use first names, plus a last initial if two people share one ("Sam B." and "Sam R.").
  2. Pair up each couple. Partners, spouses, housemates and parent and child can all be a pair.
  3. Draw. Each person gets one name, never themselves and never their own partner.
  4. Share the results the way you normally would, or use the full generator so each person opens a private link and nobody has to hold the list.

Do couples exchange as a unit or as individuals?

There are two common setups and both work. In the individual version, everyone draws one name, and partners simply cannot draw each other. A couple ends up buying two gifts and receiving two gifts, from two different people.

In the couple as a unit version, each couple counts as one entry, and the pair buys one shared gift for another couple. This is common with older friends and neighbors where the budget is one household. Enter each couple as one name, such as "Maya and Dan", and skip the pair rule.

Pick one before you invite anyone. Mixing the two leads to the classic mess: one person thinks they are buying for a couple, the other thinks only for one half.

Avoiding partner swaps

Even with couples blocked, two people can end up in a swap: A buys for B, and B buys for A. That is legal, but it feels less like a secret. Hollyhush avoids two-person swaps in groups of four or more whenever the rules allow it. A paper hat draw cannot do that, because nobody checks for it.

If you are drawing by hand and want to avoid swaps, check each pair as you go. When a swap shows up, put both slips back and redraw.

When too many couples make a draw impossible

Rules remove choices. With six people in three couples, each person can still draw four others, so you are fine. With four people in two couples, each person can draw only two, and one more rule can break it.

A rule of thumb: stay at or above six people when most of them are paired. Below that, keep couples to one or two. If you hit a wall, drop the one-way "I had her last year" rules first. The exclusions guide shows how to loosen things step by step.

Housemates, exes and other can't-draw cases

  • Housemates who share a kitchen: pair them, because they would see each other's wrapping paper.
  • A parent and a young child: pair them if the parent is buying the child's gift anyway.
  • People who just broke up or just had a fight: one-way rules are fine, and nobody needs to know why.
  • Someone who bought for the same person last year: add a one-way rule.

Gift ideas when you draw someone you barely know

Couples groups often mix people from both partners' circles, so you may draw a friend of a friend. Start with the budget on the invite, then ask a question through anonymous chat. Our gift ideas page sorts picks by price and by who they are for.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make sure couples do not draw each other in Secret Santa?

Pair them before you draw. In Hollyhush, add a rule with both names and leave it two-way, so neither can draw the other. Drawing from a hat cannot enforce this, so redraw if a couple shows up.

Should couples buy one gift or two?

Either works, but choose before inviting people. Individual means each partner buys for a different person. Couple as a unit means one shared gift for another couple. Do not mix the two in one group.

What if the rules make the draw impossible?

Hollyhush checks the rules before saving and names the people who are blocked. Remove a one-way rule or add more people, then try again.

Can housemates or family members be paired too?

Yes. A pair is just two people who cannot draw each other, so use it for roommates, parent and child, or anyone you want to keep apart.

Can I use this for a party where every guest is a couple?

Yes. If every guest is half of a couple, enter each person once and pair them. You need at least six people to keep it comfortable.
