Cookie exchange rules

In a cookie exchange, each guest bakes one batch of the same cookie, brings it to the party, and goes home with a mix of everyone else's. The simplest rule is to bake a dozen for each guest, plus a few to taste, and take home a dozen different cookies. Use the sign-up sheet below so nobody doubles up.

The basic rules

  1. Each guest bakes one type of cookie, a dozen for each person attending, plus a few extra to sample.
  2. Everyone brings their cookies packed in a container, with a card listing the name and ingredients.
  3. At the party, each guest fills their own container with a dozen of different cookies.
  4. Each guest takes the same number home. Count the cookies ahead so the math works.
  5. Homemade only. No store-bought dough unless the group agrees.
  6. Label every cookie with allergens. Use one rule for all: nuts, dairy, gluten, eggs.

Ratios: how many to bake

A simpler version: each guest bakes six dozen and brings them in bags of six. That is enough to share a bag with each person. Check the recipe yield, since it varies. If you do not want to bake that many, set a smaller rule like two cookies per guest per kind, and make a smaller swap.

Use the sign-up sheet to assign cookies

The most common problem is five people bringing chocolate chip. Use the printable sign-up sheet on this page to assign cookie types. Print it or share it, and have each guest write a name and cookie type.

Here is how to use it for assignments: list types down the page, such as sugar cookies, gingerbread, shortbread, thumbprints, bark and no-bake. Add a column for allergens. Each guest writes their name beside one type. Once a line is taken, it is gone. Share the finished sheet so everyone sees what is coming.

Packing and transport

  • Pack cookies in a single layer with parchment between layers.
  • Use a sturdy tin or a plastic container with a lid.
  • Keep soft cookies away from crisp ones so they do not go stale.
  • Do not mix frosted cookies with bare ones without a separator.
  • Bring a few extra bags or boxes for guests to take their cookies home.
  • Keep cookies in a cool place until the party.

Allergy labeling and food safety

Write ingredients on a card at each plate. At minimum, flag the major allergens such as peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat and soy. Add a note if a cookie was baked in a kitchen with nuts. Anyone with a severe allergy should decide for themselves, so give them the information and let them choose. Keep raw-egg items out of the swap, and refrigerate anything with cream cheese frosting.

Ask each guest about allergies on the invite so you can ask bakers to avoid common problems.

Extras that make it better

Add a vote for best cookie, ask for recipe cards to swap, or add a donation drive. Plan a time of about two hours so people can chat. If you are adding a gift swap, see holiday party planning checklist and Secret Santa holiday party ideas. For a simple draw, try the Secret Santa generator.
