Gift exchange bingo

Gift exchange bingo is a party game where guests mark squares like 'someone steals a gift' or 'wrapped in newspaper' as the swap happens, and the first row wins a small prize. It keeps people watching the whole exchange. Here are the rules and a full 25 square list.

How gift bingo works

  1. Give each guest a 5 by 5 grid, printed or drawn by hand. The center square is free.
  2. Fill the other 24 squares with events that might happen during the swap. Use the idea list below, and let each person place the squares in any order so no two cards match.
  3. As the exchange runs, guests mark a square when they see that event happen. Use pen, a coin or a dry erase marker.
  4. The first person to complete a row, column or diagonal calls out 'Bingo'. The host checks the card before giving a prize.
  5. Keep playing for a blackout round if the exchange is long, where the winner has to fill every square.

A 25 square idea list

Print two or three different arrangements so cards do not match. A guest can also write their own squares.

Rules that keep bingo fun

  • Do not call out the square while someone is opening a gift. Let them have their moment, then mark quietly.
  • Squares must be seen by the guest, not heard secondhand.
  • The host is the judge. The host's ruling is final and funny.
  • Squares about people, such as 'someone cries', should stay kind. Use 'someone laughs' or 'someone cheers'.
  • Do not mix the bingo rules with the gift rules. Run the exchange the way you normally would. See white elephant steal rules for the gift side.

How to run it at a party

Hand out the cards when people arrive, with a pen and a short note on how it works. Put a stack on the snack table so latecomers can join.

If your party is a white elephant, the steals give you the best squares, so lean on those. For a Secret Santa exchange, bingo works best at the reveal, with squares such as 'someone guesses their Santa' and 'gift was handmade'. If your group is mixed, check office holiday party games for other low pressure options.

For a virtual party, share one grid image and have people mark it on their own screen, or call the squares in the chat.

Bingo prizes that do not feel silly

Keep prizes small, shareable and fun. Winning should be about bragging rights.

  • A pack of good chocolate or a bag of candy for the winner to share.
  • A fancy pen, a mini candle or a travel coffee sleeve.
  • The right to pick the next game or song at the party.
  • A blank trophy made from a mug and a ribbon, passed along next year.
  • A small gift card in a work safe amount for office groups.

Variations

  • Reverse bingo: the first to fill every square loses, and has to give the toast.
  • Two card bingo: every guest gets two cards. The easier card is for kids.
  • Team bingo: tables work together and share one card.
  • Predict the gift: guests write what they think the opened gift will be, and score a point for each right guess.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play gift exchange bingo?

Each guest gets a 5 by 5 card of events that might happen at the swap. They mark squares as they see them, and the first complete row calls bingo.

Can you play bingo at a white elephant party?

Yes. White elephant is a great fit because steals, bad wrapping and big reactions fill squares fast. Use the idea list above.

What should the free space be?

Anything that always happens, like 'someone says thank you'. The standard free center square works too.

How many squares do I need?

A standard card has 25, with 24 events and one free square. A shorter 3 by 3 card with 9 squares works for small groups or kids.

What prizes work for gift bingo?

Small, shareable and cheap: chocolate, a fancy pen, a mug or bragging rights. Keep to a low budget so it does not outshine the gifts.

Can I play gift bingo over video?

Yes. Share the card image and mark squares on screen, or call the squares in chat. See virtual white elephant for a full online setup.
