Secret Santa etiquette

Good Secret Santa etiquette comes down to four things: stay inside the budget, keep the secret, buy something the person would like, and say thank you. Here are the dos and don'ts that matter most.

Dos

  • Do stick to the budget. If the number is $25, spend about $25.
  • Do ask for a wishlist, or send an anonymous question through chat.
  • Do wrap the gift and add a short, kind card.
  • Do deliver on time. If you are late, tell the organizer.
  • Do write a thank-you to the group, even if you do not know your Santa.
  • Do think about allergies, diets and beliefs. Skip food or alcohol unless you know it fits.
  • Do tell the organizer early if you need to drop out.

Don'ts

  • Don't reveal your match, even to a partner, until the reveal.
  • Don't buy a joke gift unless the group is a joke group.
  • Don't make comments about someone's body, age, relationship or money in the gift.
  • Don't complain about your gift in public or ask for a swap in front of the group.
  • Don't try to guess your Santa out loud and pressure people to confirm.
  • Don't regift something obvious, like a gift with another person's tag on it.
  • Don't forget the person who joined late or who is remote.

Etiquette for each group

GroupKey etiquette
OfficeKeep it work appropriate, follow gift rules from HR, and make it optional.
FamilyMatch budgets across age groups, and consider kids with their own draw.
FriendsDo not compete on spending, and respect any budget differences.
Remote teamShip early, use digital gifts for other countries, and keep addresses private.
School or classCheck school rules, keep gifts small and avoid food allergies.

Receiving a gift you do not like

Smile, say thank you, and look at the card. Remember that someone spent time on it. If it is wrong in a way that matters, such as an allergy, tell the organizer privately. Never post about it. If a swap is allowed, ask the organizer, not the Santa.

If you suspect your Santa

Keep it to yourself or share a guess only in a guessing game. Pushing someone to confirm is not fair to them. If you guess right and the Santa stays quiet, play along until the reveal. Read Secret Santa rules for the full rule set and problems and fixes if something goes wrong.

Etiquette for the organizer

The organizer has a few extra duties. Answer questions fast, keep the draw private, remind people without nagging, and never use what you know to tease anyone. If you can see the matches, say so up front. Better, use a tool that hides them from you, such as Hollyhush. Close sign-ups on the date you promised, even if one more person asks. Thank everyone at the end, including the people who joined late.

Frequently asked questions

What is Secret Santa etiquette?

Stay in budget, keep the secret, buy something thoughtful, deliver on time and say thanks.

Is it rude to not take part in Secret Santa?

No. Participation should be optional, especially at work. Just tell the organizer early.

Should you thank your Secret Santa?

Yes. If you do not know who it is, thank the whole group.

Can you ask for a gift you want?

Yes, through a wishlist. That is the point of a wishlist.

What if my Secret Santa spent too little or too much?

Say thanks and move on. If it is a repeated problem, remind the group of the budget rule next year.
