White elephant for large groups
A big white elephant works if you control time. Use a lower steal limit, split into tables or rounds, and track turns on a screen so no one loses count. Here is a plan for 20 to 60 players.
How long it takes
A typical game runs about five minutes per player. At 30 players that is two and a half hours, which is too long for most events. With the changes below you can cut that to about one hour.
| Players | Plain game | With the changes below |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | About 1 hour | About 45 minutes |
| 30 | About 2.5 hours | About 1 hour (two tables) |
| 60 | Too long | About 1 hour (four tables) |
Five changes that save time
- Split into tables of 10 to 15 players, each with its own gift pile and its own game.
- Use a steal limit of one or two, not three.
- Set a turn timer of about 60 seconds. If you take longer, the host picks for you.
- Skip the final swap, or allow it only at the end of each table.
- Put the turn order on a screen so everyone sees who is next and who is on deck.

Keep the room engaged
- Have the next two players stand by the gift pile.
- Ask players to say the gift out loud when they open it.
- Give the waiting players something to do, like a vote on the best wrap.
- Pick a lively announcer who keeps jokes short.
If a large group will not meet in one room, consider Secret Santa instead, since it scales better.
What to prepare ahead
- A list of players per table, with names spelled the way people want them shown.
- A clear spot for the gift pile at each table, with gifts numbered or unlabeled.
- One person per table who knows the rules and can settle a dispute in under a minute.
- A screen or a printed rules card at each table.
- A plan for latecomers: they go last at their table with the lowest number.
Setting up tables
Count the players and divide into tables of 10 to 15. Give each table its own host with a copy of the rules, its own gift pile and its own turn order. Keep the gifts within the same price limit across tables so no table feels cheated.
If you want a grand finale, let the winner of each table bring one favorite gift to a final round, or let each table vote for the funniest gift of the night.
Run the numbers fairly
Draw numbers with a tool, not by hand, so nobody gets blamed. The white elephant number generator gives every player a unique number. With tables, draw within each table. Note the steal rules so players know what is allowed.

Frequently asked questions
How many people can play white elephant?
Any number, but 8 to 15 is ideal. For larger groups split into tables.
How do you run white elephant with 30 people?
Use two tables, a steal limit of two and a turn timer.
How many steals should a large group allow?
One or two. Higher limits make the game too long.
How long does white elephant take for 20 people?
About an hour and a half with standard rules, less with a lower steal limit.
