White elephant variations

If standard white elephant is too slow or too cutthroat for your group, try a variation. Below are 12 you can run tonight, with the rule changes and when each one works best.

How variations work

Most variations change one of three things: how gifts are chosen, how stealing works, or what the gifts are. Pick the one that fits your group's size and mood. Tell the group the rule change before the game starts, and write it on the rules card. The basics are in white elephant rules.

Mixing variations

  • Pair a theme with any steal rule. A snack theme and a steal limit of two is easy.
  • Use the dice game for a warm-up, then play standard for the main round.
  • Avoid combining too many changes. Two rule changes is plenty.

Gift ideas for each style

Gift choice matters in every version. For funny gifts see funny white elephant gifts, and for useful ones see useful white elephant gifts. If you want fewer headaches, set a price at the invite and stick to it.

  1. Standard with a steal limit

Open or steal in number order. Each gift can be stolen up to three times, then it is frozen.

  2. Dice game

Players roll dice and the numbers decide whether to pass left, pass right or take a new gift. See the dice game.

  3. Reverse white elephant

All gifts are opened first. Players then choose or steal from the open table, followed by a final swap.

  4. No-steal white elephant

Players pick and open a gift, and nobody steals. Good for kids and sensitive groups.

  5. One-steal limit

Each gift can only be stolen once. It speeds up large groups.

  6. Themed swap

All gifts follow one theme, such as snacks, books or handmade.

  7. Blind swap

Gifts stay wrapped until the end. Players steal wrapped gifts based on tags or hints, then all open at once.

  8. Mystery bags

Use opaque bags instead of wrapping paper. Players pick and open, with one swap allowed.

  9. Left Right Center gift pass

Players roll dice with L, R and C and pass gifts around the circle until the timer ends.

  10. Wrapping ball

Prizes are wrapped inside a ball. Players unwrap layers while music plays.

  11. Chinese auction

Players place raffle tickets in cups beside the gifts they want. A ticket is drawn for each gift.

  12. Story swap

A story with left and right is read aloud. Each time you hear one, you pass your gift that way.
